Italian-Canadian Identity
BACKGROUND
British Columbia Region
The National Congress of Italian Canadians (NCIC) was formed in Montreal in 1974 in response to stereotyping appearing in the mainstream media about people of Italian origin. Thus its initial goal was to enhance the image of Italians in Canadian society. NCIC soon set other objectives, e.g., creating two earthquake relief projects in Italy (for Friuli in 1976 and for Campania in 1980). In the next few years, buoyed
by the Canadian multicultural policy of the federal government, the NCIC achieved a presence throughout Canada.
The precise structures and aims of the provincial branches were determined by the particular needs and conditions existing in the different parts of the country.
The B.C. Region of the NCIC was founded in 1981 with membership open to both
individuals and groups throughout the province.
